UN, Nearly 89,000 Women Killed Worldwide in 2022 – Breaking News

Nearly 89,000 women and girls were killed intentionally in 2022 worldwide, the highest number recorded annually in two decades, compared to 81,100 victims in 2021, according to new research from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and UN Women.

Currently available data for the year 2022 suggests that the rise in femicide occurred despite a decline in overall homicides. 55% (48,800) of all femicides, according to UN research reports, are committed by family members or partners, which means on average that more than 133 women or girls are killed every day from their own homes. In contrast, only 12% of male homicides begin in the home.

“The alarming number of femicides is a stark reminder that humanity still struggles with deep-rooted inequalities and violence against women and girls,” said Ghada Waly, executive director of Undoc, calling on governments to “invest in more inclusive and well-equipped institutions to end impunity.” , strengthen prevention and help victims.”

For the first time since Undoc began publishing regional estimates in 2013, Africa overtook Asia in 2022 to become the region with the highest number of victims both overall (20,000) and relative to population. Female population (2.8 victims per 100,000 women). Homicides of women by partners or family members also increased in North America by 29% between 2017 and 2022, in part due to improved recording practices. However, in Europe they have decreased by 21% since 2010.
