NEW YORK (AP) — New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 1993, according to a legal summons filed Wednesday.

The three-page file does not contain details of the alleged assault, but it names Adams, the New York Police Department’s Transit Bureau and the New York Police Department’s Guards Association as defendants.

“Plaintiff was sexually assaulted by Defendant Eric Adams in New York, New York in 1993 while they were both employed in New York City,” the summons said.

The filing seeks a trial and $5 million in relief. It has been filed in state Supreme Court in Manhattan. The woman’s attorney did not immediately respond to an email request for comment Thursday.

A city council spokesperson said in a statement: “The mayor does not know who this person is. If they met, he doesn’t remember it. But he would never do anything that would physically harm another person and strongly denies any such allegation.

Adams, a Democrat, was a New York City police officer who rose to the rank of captain before entering politics. He served as a state senator and Brooklyn borough president before becoming a major.

Summons were served under Adult Survivors Act, a private New York law that paved the way for a wave of lawsuits against famous men accused of sexual misconduct. The filing comes as an FBI investigation pursues Adams into his 2021 campaign, leading agents to confiscate his phones and raid the home of his main campaign fundraiser.
