Stores are open on Black Friday: Check the business hours of Walmart, Target, and other stores

Black Friday is approaching, when retailers kick off the holiday season with offers aimed at getting customers into the shopping mood.

the term “Black Friday” In terms of shopping, the day after Thanksgiving is often credited to Philadelphia as having to deal with large crowds that thronged the city streets before the annual Army-Navy game and cash-in sales. According to the December 18, 1961 issue of Public Relations News, it became common for police to refer to post-Thanksgiving shopping as Black Friday and Black Saturday because of the headaches they caused.

Retailers began using the term in the late 1980s as the opening bell for the holidays. Of course, Black Friday has more accurately turned into a month of deals starting in October, when Halloween lanterns are still flickering.

A number of stores that were closed on Thanksgiving, including Walmart and Target, will reopen early Friday as the holiday shopping season begins in earnest.
